Zambia - 2017Sable

I did a two week Habitat for Humanity Global Village Build in Zambia in July 2017. I traveled to Zambia a few days ahead of the rest of the GV team and stayed at Chaminuka Lodge which is a private game reserve and Lodge situated about 25km outside Lusaka. The reserve includes 10,000 acres of mixed woodland and savannah and contains many species of African animals and birds. The accommodations and food was very good and the Lodge has a large collection of African art and antiques. Photos of Chaminuka

Linda CommunityThe Habitat GV build was in Linda Community which in on the outskirts of Lusaka. The community has a population somewhere between 25 and 35 thousand, unemployment is high and many families lack basic services Linda Community such as health care, education, water and sanitation. Poverty and HIV have produced many young orphans who are cared for by elderly grandparents. Photos of Linda community and children

We stayed in Lusaka and commuted to and from the build site each day. Lusaka is the capital of Zambia and has a population of well over 3 million. It is a very vibrant and interesting city. Photos of Lusaka

RhinoAfter completing the GV build the team traveled to Livingston and spent several days touring the area. We stayed in Prana Tented Camp and used Wild Side Tours and Safaris for most of our tours and transportation around Livingstone.  One highlight was an afternoon spent at Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls and stretches about 12km up-stream from the Falls. We did a Rhino tracking tour on foot through the Wildlife section of the park and saw antelope, zebra, wildebeest, birds and of course Victoria Fallsrhinos. Photos of Livingston and rhino walk

You can’t go to Livingstone and not visit Victoria Falls. I have been to the falls twice before but on the Zimbabwe side so this was the first time seeing them from Zambia. There was lots of water in the Zambezi River so the falls had lots of water going over them. An inspiring sight. Photos of Victoria Falls

We also did a day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana and did both land and river tours of this amazing park. Photos of Chobe
